The only hologram cover in Sports Illustrated history

Jack McCallum's cover essay, "Alone on the Mountaintop," ran inside. The hologram itself was an unusual piece of production for a weekly magazine — a full-colour embossed stereogram, applied as a decal to the newsstand and subscriber runs.

Jordan had just won his first NBA championship in June 1991 and was named Sportsman of the Year that December. The Bulls would win five more titles over the decade that followed.

The only hologram cover in the magazine’s history. Holographer Sharon McCormack filmed Jordan smiling in slow motion while he was rotated in front of the camera — perfectly still, without blinking — so his eyes follow the viewer from any angle.
