Kenner’s Starting Lineup was a line of NBA action figures sold in toy stores, not a pack-based trading-card product. Each figure came packaged with a collector card of the same player tucked into the box, so the only way to obtain the card was to buy the toy — there were no wax packs and no cases, and the card entered the hobby as a byproduct of the action-figure run. This is the 1990 ‘Yellow’ card, named for its bright yellow border and distinguished by the ‘ROOKIE YEAR 1984’ banner across the top. The photograph shows a young Jordan in a white Bulls home jersey, with the Starting Lineup logo and Chicago Bulls roundel at the base and his name on a black nameplate below.
The back leads with a writeup of his 1984–85 rookie season — Rookie of the Year, a 28.2 scoring average, third in the NBA scoring race — alongside his bio and a © 1990 NBA / MSA / Kenner line noting it was printed in Hong Kong. Because the cards were packaged with a toy rather than sealed in packs — pressed against the figure’s tray and handled outside any sleeve — clean, well-centered copies are difficult to find, and gem-mint survivors are genuinely scarce: of 1,654 copies graded across all grades, only 35 have received a PSA 10, a gem rate of 2.11 percent.
